How can aromatherapy help with stress by Certified Aromatherapist Balot Del Rosario

In today’s fast-paced and stressful world, it is no surprise that many people suffer from stress and anxiety. Fortunately, there are many natural remedies available that can help alleviate the symptoms of stress.

One such remedy is using aromatherapy for stress, which uses essential oils to promote relaxation and calmness in the body and mind.

Aromatherapy works by activating the olfactory system, which is responsible for our sense of smell. When we inhale an essential oil, its aroma molecules travel through the nasal cavity and into the limbic system of the brain. This is the part of the brain that controls our emotions, memories, and behaviors. Essential oils can have a direct effect on the limbic system, which can trigger a relaxation response, reduce anxiety, and improve mood.

Some of my favorite essential oils for stress relief include lavender, vetiver, patchouli, bergamot, cistus, and frankincense.

Lavandula angustifolia

Lavender is perhaps the most well-known essential oil for relaxation and for good reason. It has a calming and soothing effect on the nervous system, making it ideal for reducing feelings of anxiety and promoting better sleep.

Citrus bergamia

Next, bergamot is a citrus oil that has a cheerful and uplifting scent. Based on studies, it reduces anxiety levels and improves mood in people with mild to moderate depression.

Chrysopogon zizanioides

Vetiver oil comes from the roots of the vetiver plant native to India and has a deep, earthy scent. It is popular for its grounding properties, and most use vetiver to soothe the nervous system and promote relaxation. Studies have shown that vetiver oil is effective in reducing anxiety and improving the symptoms of depression.

Santalum album / Santalum spicatum

In addition to these oils, we add Sandalwood. Sandalwood oil has a sweet, woody aroma and is common in meditation and spiritual practices. It has calming properties and can help reduce stress and anxiety. Sandalwood oil has a sedative effect on the nervous system, making it an effective treatment for insomnia and other sleep disorders.

Pogostemon cablin

Patchouli oil (of course) has a musky, earthy scent and helps with relaxation and reducing stress. It has soothing properties and has been shown to improve the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Patchouli oil can help calm the mind and promote feelings of well-being and tranquility.

Cistus ladaniferus

Cistus is something that I use a lot recently. Its complicated woody, earthy, floral aroma is very calming to the nervous system.

Boswellia carterii

Finally, frankincense is a resinous oil that has a grounding and centering effect on the mind. It is often used in meditation practices to promote relaxation and spiritual growth.

There are many ways to use essential oils for stress relief.

One popular method is to add a few drops to a diffuser and inhale the aroma. This is a great way to create a relaxing atmosphere at home or in the office. Another way to use essential oils is to mix them with a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba, and apply them to the skin. This can be done through massage or by applying it on your body through body oils, roller blends, and the like.

By incorporating aromatherapy into your daily routine, you can create a sense of calm and well-being in your life. So why not give it a try? Your mind and body will thank you.
