Book of the Week: An Abundance of Katherines

Corporate Junkie_Katherines

Like probably everyone else, I was first introduced to John Green with his book, The Fault in our Stars. It’s a touching book (yes, it made me cry) — uhh, but this post is not about that. Haha.

This week, I finished another one of his novels, An Abundance of Katherines. It is a light read with a lot of bell curves and equations involved. Haha. It was amusing how the main character Colin tries to analyse his relationships and put them in a mathematical equation in the hopes of predicting his success (or demise) for a future love.

Here are some of my favourite quotes:

He liked the idea of coffee quite a lot — a warm drink that gave you energy and had been for centuries associated with sophisticates and intellectuals.

You can love someone so much, he thought. But you can never love people as much as you can miss them.

That’s what I was thinking about before you came. I was thinking about your mattering business. I feel like, like, how you matter is defined by the things that matter to you. You matter as much as the things that matter to you do. And I got so backwards, trying to make myself matter to him. All this time, there were real things to care about: real, good people who care about me, and this place. It’s so easy to get stuck. You just get caught being something, being special or cool or whatever, to the point where you don’t even know why you need it; you just think you do”

I rate this book 3.5 out of 5 because of the following reasons:

1. When I read a book, I usually do not want to think hard or analyse things (that’s just me)! I want to FEEL. The bell curves and mathematical equations were something I had to recall to make sense of things. I didn’t want to study them again so I just ignored the part.

2. I find the ending a little predictable.

3. The Fault in our Stars was such a good read and there goes my bias. Hehe.

How about you? How did you find this book? Share your thoughts in the comments!
