Choosing Your APAS Doctor

Choosing a doctor who will accompany you in your APAS journey is crucial.

choosing your doctor

Because you have to work with your doctors so often, it is only sensible that you feel comfortable when dealing with them. In the APAS Facebook Support Page, our APAS sisters usually give their own recommendation based on their experience but I really feel there is no other way to find out if you are hiyang with them unless you really meet them.

In the course of my APAS journey, I consulted two obstetricians and only maintained one immunologist. I was initially under Dr. Valerie Guinto and when she went to the US, I transferred to Dr. Sua-Lao. I then transferred back to Dr. Guinto when I got pregnant. My immunological treatments were done by Dr. Carol Gloria.

In my case, I consulted my OB-perinatologist almost every month when I was trying to conceive and every two weeks when we were already pregnant. As for my immunologist, I saw her every month as well.

There are some things that you need to consider when looking for a doctor (in my experience) and these are:

  1. Affiliations. Which hospitals are they affiliated? This is important because treatment for APAS is not a one-time thing. You need to see your OB and immunologist quite often so their clinic location is very important for your convenience.
  2. Schedule. If you are not working, then this should not be a problem. However, if you are a working mama like me, check out your doctor’s schedule and if it would fit yours. What I learned though in this journey is the value of patience. Most high-risk OBs and specialty doctors have a long queue of patients so you have really no choice but to wait.
  3. Professional Fee. On top of the tests and treatments, your bills for consultation fees can easily pile up. Check your doctor’s professional fee for delivery so you can prepare for it, as well. I have heard some stories that there are some immunologist who charge a professional fee for a successful delivery.
  4. Course of Treatment. Check with your doctor what is his/her planned treatment. Is it too aggressive for you? Do you want a more natural alternative? Understanding how your doctor will treat you and if it is aligned to what you want can spell future success.
  5. Feeling of comfort. This is not something quantitative. It is really gut feel and I think that this is the most important factor of all. It is best if you feel that your doctor is one with you in this journey because there will be times that it can get very frustrating. In my case, it was very comforting that Dr. Valerie and Dr. Carol are just a text away.

Here is a list of my doctors for the treatment and pregnancy:

Doctor’s Name Specialty Contact Number Affiliations
Dr. Valerie Guinto OB/ Perinatologist / Sono 9224175472 St. Lukes BGC
9172447568 Asian Hospital
Manila Doctors
PGH
Dr. Chiaoling Sua-Lao OB / Infertility and Laparoscopy Specialist 2453917 Medical City
Manila Doctors
PGH
Dr. Carol Gloria Immunologist 9989548327 Asian Hospital
Dr. CJ Gloria Immunologist 9989548327 Asian Hospital
St. Lukes BGC

I was mostly under the care of Dr. Guinto for this whole APAS journey. When we were having a hard time to conceive (in 2014), I got a second opinion from Dr. Sua-Lao who is a laparoscopy specialist to check if there were blockages in my fallopian tube. Dr. Carol Gloria was my main immunologist but when I was admitted in St. Lukes during my first trimester because of hyperemesis gravidarum, Dr. CJ (Dr. Carol’s husband) was the one who took care of me.

I am eternally grateful to my doctors for taking care of me throughout this journey. What I love about Dr. Carol and Dr. Valerie is that they always encourage us to pray because more than the treatments, our fate still relies on Him. To have doctors who have the same faith as you do is something that is very comforting in times like this.

I pray that you find your own doctors soon to accompany you in  your APAS journey.

Babydust, loves!

P.S There are many other specialists that other APAS patients recommend in the group. If you are interested, you can request to join the APAS Facebook Page>> and message the admin to know more about APAS and other repro-immuno disorders.

Affordable Baby Stuff from 48 Zodiac, Bel-Air

Are you looking for affordable baby stuff for your little one?

Well, I have some good news for you! My sister-in-law told me about this place in Bel-Air that sells affordable baby stuff where you can buy mittens for as low as P20!

I have been wanting to go but since husband does not allow me to drive anymore, I am at his mercy. So one fateful day, I was able to drag him to go with me to Bel-Air to check out this outlet store my sister-in-law has been talking about.

I first called the number, +632 896 4802, to check if they were open during lunch hours. Manang Vicky, the caretaker, said yes. The place, which sells Hello Baby products, is located at 48 Zodiac Street, Bel-Air, Makati. Initially, Eggy and I tried to pass through Rockwell gate but we were redirected by the guards. You need to use the Bel-Air entrance near Jupiter Street. When husband surrendered his license to the guard, they quipped, “Ayan, bibili ng pangbaby sila Ma’am.”

The place is quite famous as some other celebrities have been raving about it. Once you arrive at the place, you can ring the bell and look for Manang Vicky. She will meet you at the entrance and she will direct you to this inconspicuous room that is less than 20 sqm.

When I entered that small air-conditioned room, I was instantly overwhelmed. Baby clothes, everywhere, stacked one after the other. There were no prices so it was a little hard to estimate the value of what you have been pulling out of the shelves. I gathered a pile then asked Manang Vicky how much was my running total.

These were the items we took home. 🙂

Affordable Baby Stuff from 48 Zodiac

For P2,000, we got the following:

3 sets of mittens

2 sets shirt and pajama

2 pcs baby bonnets

3 pcs tie-side infant shirts

2 pcs bibs

1 pc towel

1 pc receiving blanket

2 pcs burp cloths

2 pcs white overalls

2 pcs printed overalls

Super sulit! Should I have gotten them from the mall, I would have spent twice as much. Also, I noticed that they have more options for baby girls so if you have a little princess, don’t miss going to this place.

So, mama, what are you waiting for? Drag your husband (like I did) and bring him to this place. I am sure you will both love a little bit of shopping for your little one!

Milestone Onesies from Baby sTEEckies

Yes. I do admit. I am addicted to Santi. I think about him every single minute of the day, not to mention, he makes his presence felt ALL the time. I think I have a circus baby inside my belly.

Today, we just finished another Doppler Velocimetry at St. Lukes BGC, probably my 11th or 12th time for this whole pregnancy. Most women would usually undergo just 3 or 4 ultrasounds for the whole nine yards but for me, an APAS survivor, I need to have it once every two weeks in the first trimester (total of 6), once a month in the second trimester (total of 3) and now, on my last stretch, once in every two weeks, again (total of 6). So yeaah, the ultrasound machine is my best friend. After today’s ultrasound, our hearts are once again filled with the constant reassurance from God that everything will be okay.

Anyway… going back Santi.

I keep on hoarding clothes for Santi over the past two months. Eggy only gave me a go signal to buy stuff for the baby on our 26th week. With everything that we have been through, it was is hard not to get paranoid that something can just go wrong so despite all the hard work and effort. Needless to say, we kept our expectations at bay.

*distracted pregnant mind*

Going back…

I found this shop selling uber adorable milestone onesies on Instagram. For some time now, I have been pinning adorable photos in Pinterest, dreaming of what I would do when my little one comes out. I was checking out milestone cards which they sell in Amazon but found them to be ridiculously expensive. I was trying to replicate them with my horrendous design skills and gave up on it after seeing the outcome, lol.

I was ecstatic then, when I saw these milestone onesies! Not only do they flaunt your baby’s milestones, he/she can wear it, too! Too adorable!

The name of the shop is BabysTEEckies. Check these out –
